Welcome to my web site for natural health. ..............................................................
Welcome to my web site for natural health. Through 25 years of practice as a psychotherapist, I became increasingly convinced that the human mind and body have the ability to heal without dangerous drugs. One of my favorite role models, Dr. Albert Schweitzer, said: "Each patient carries his own doctor inside him. They come to us not knowing that truth. We are at our best when we give the doctor who resides within each patient the chance to go to work."
My clients who have suffered with depression have instinctively known that drugging their brains was not the right answer. Many had tried antidepressant medications, and had suffered unacceptable side effects as a result. And the withdrawal effects of coming off the medications were often worse. What the prescribing physicians failed to tell them was that antidepressant medications, like so many others, cause drug dependence.
I knew there had to be a better way to treat depression. The modern medical model views depression as a chemical imbalance in the brain, and treats this as though it is the "cause" of the depression. Turning the problem around, I began viewing this imbalance not as a cause, but as a symptom. To get at the underlying cause, I had to view each person as a whole, each with unique genetic influences, personal histories and stresses, and diets.
After considerable research and testing, I discovered how important the diet factor is. Reviewing the research literature, I was struck by how the rate of depression has increased in sync with the modernization of our diet. Knowing I was on to something, I began using nutritional assessments with my clients, and discovered imbalances and shortages in their diets that matched the scientific literature on nutrients and symptoms of mood disorders. I began treating clients by changing their diets and, where appropriate, recommending targeted nutritional supplements and amino acids.
Diet is not the only factor that has created a so-called chemical imbalance in the brains of so many depression sufferers. In my doctoral research I was able to establish a very strong relationship between how we think and how we feel. I found a very powerful tool in the use of guided imagery to change thoughts and feelings. I later studied the research in the field of Positive Psychology, and learned how to help people go beyond simply relieving symptoms. With changes in diet, lifestyle, and thought style, my clients were not just free of depression, they were becoming happy! And the changes went beyond mental health. Symptoms of many other disease processes improved as well, with better weight control being at the top of the list.
